Metals-API is a broad metals and currency feed: 726 symbols on one key, from gold and silver to LME base metals and Indian city gold rates. Paid plans start at $39.99 a month for 5,000 calls with 10-minute updates. It suits teams that need many metals or LBMA and LME history, and it asks for more care over price, overage billing and commercial terms than its home page suggests.

  • Plans run from Bronze at $39.99 a month (5,000 calls, 10-minute updates) to Rhodium at $999 a month (5,000,000 calls). Enterprise starts at $25,000 a year.
  • Coverage is the strength: 726 symbols, 185 currencies, LBMA gold history from 1968 and LME history from 2008.
  • Updates reach 60 seconds on Silver ($79.99) and WebSocket streaming starts on Platinum ($219.99).
  • Overage billing is on by default at $0.032435 per extra call, and the free plan cannot be used commercially.

Plans and prices

The pricing page lists six plans plus Enterprise. A plan buys calls, update speed, symbols per request and history windows together, so moving up for one feature raises the others.

Annual billing is 17% cheaper, which the FAQ describes as two months free. Plans can be stacked on one billing cycle to add capacity.

What it does well

Breadth. One key reaches platinum, palladium, copper, aluminium, nickel, zinc, tin and lithium, plus COMEX futures symbols and city gold rates for ten Indian cities. If a product prices many metals, no other service in this comparison covers as much.

Benchmark archives. The documentation lists LBMA gold history back to 1968, LBMA silver to 2010, platinum and palladium to 1990, and LME metals to 2008. Those series need Silver or above.

Endpoints. The documentation lists 15: latest, historical, bid and ask, convert, time series, fluctuation, intraday, carat, lowest and highest, OHLC, LBMA, LME, India rates, supported symbols and WebSocket. Code samples cover eleven languages and there is a Postman collection.

AI tooling. An MCP server at metals-api.mcp.metals-api.com offers eight tools on every plan. Each tool call counts as one request against the monthly quota, as a REST call does. The site also publishes llms.txt and an OpenAI-compatible proxy.

Where it falls short

Entry price. The cheapest plan is $39.99 a month, and Bronze leaves out the LBMA and LME history, the India endpoint and WebSocket. Fifteen symbols per request is a small ceiling for a catalog of 726.

Overage. The Soft Limit lets calls continue past the quota at $0.032435 each, billed at the end of the cycle. It is enabled by default and the FAQ says you can turn it off in account settings. Terms allow suspension if those invoices go unpaid.

Inconsistent pages. Symbol counts differ across pages: 539, 541, 600+, 618+, 724 and 726. Support hours appear as 7am to 4pm, 8am to 5pm and "any time of the day". The MCP page puts the key in a Bearer header while the documentation puts it in an api_key argument. Check the endpoint you rely on before you build on it.

Rough edges. REST keys travel in the URL query string. A USD base returns inverted prices, so you apply 1/value yourself. Same-day fluctuation is unavailable and time series cannot end on the current date. The Python package is version 0.4, last uploaded in May 2024, and the Node and PHP clients are version 0.1.0 from February 2026.

Terms to read before you pay

  • Commercial use. The terms say the free plan cannot be used for any commercial or public use, and that commercial use must stop when a subscription ends.
  • Competing products. Data cannot be used to create, train or support a competing API, database or service.
  • Refunds. Refunds apply within 2 hours of the first payment and only if you made no more than 10 calls. Standard plans get no refund for downtime, and a custom SLA needs Enterprise.
  • Accuracy. The terms say data may not always have the expected accuracy, and that a call returning wrong data still counts against your quota.
  • Uptime. The FAQ claims 99.99% over twelve months. The status page numbers did not load when checked, so that figure is unverified here.

Where goldprice.dev differs

goldprice.dev covers fewer metals. It serves gold, silver and copper spot, quoted in 31 currencies, and has no LBMA or LME archives. Gold daily history starts in 1996 on Plus and Pro.

Who should pick which

Pick Metals-API for a catalog that includes industrial metals, LBMA or LME history, or Indian city rates, and when 10-minute or 60-second updates meet your needs.

Pick goldprice.dev when gold, silver or copper is the product, you want a published source and timestamp on each price, you need dealer buy and sell prices by country, or you want a free plan you can use in production with a visible link.
