Gold-API.com is the simplest gold price API to try: GET /price/XAU needs no key and no signup, and live prices carry no stated request limit. History and OHLC need a key and a free account, with 10 requests an hour on Free and unlimited use on the $10 Premium plan. It covers seven assets, updates every 30 seconds and offers no SDK, streaming, MCP server or status page.
- Live prices are free, keyless and unlimited, with a fair-use rule against multiple requests per second to one endpoint.
- Premium costs $10 a month and lifts the history and OHLC cap and adds hour and minute grouping.
- Coverage is gold, silver, platinum, palladium, copper, bitcoin and ethereum in 19 quote currencies, updated every 30 seconds.
- Commercial use is allowed on the free plan, and attribution is optional.

Plans and prices
The pricing page lists two plans. Free is $0 with unlimited requests to the real-time price endpoint and 10 requests an hour to the price history or OHLC endpoint. Premium is $10 a month and includes unlimited history requests, minute and hour aggregations, unlimited OHLC access and email support. There is no annual plan and no larger tier. The card says Premium and its button says Upgrade to Pro.
The FAQ states that there is no rate limit on real-time prices, but that sending multiple requests per second to the same endpoint counts as spam on every plan and can lead to an IP ban. Past 10 requests an hour on Free, requests are throttled, with no status code or retry header described.
What it does well
No friction. A request to https://api.gold-api.com/price/XAU returns JSON with no key, which makes it the fastest way to test a gold price call. CORS is open, so a browser can call the free endpoints directly.
A clear update schedule. The FAQ says live prices update every 30 seconds and advises caching each response for 30 seconds. The Cache-Control header counts down to the next update. On 2 November the header read max-age=21, then 18, then 14 on later calls.
Plain commercial terms. The terms state that commercial use is always permitted, including web apps, mobile apps and sites you build for clients, and the FAQ says attribution is appreciated but not required.
A cheap upgrade. One $10 plan removes the history cap, and the llms.txt file documents every endpoint with parameters.
Where it falls short
Thin history. The history endpoint returns one aggregate per bucket (a maximum, minimum or average) and OHLC returns one candle for the range you ask for. Neither gives a series of bars. No page states how far back the archive goes.
Little provenance. The FAQ says prices come from multiple providers with fallback and cross-checking, and names none. A live response carries currency, currencySymbol, exchangeRate, name, price, symbol and updatedAt. It has no source, no bid or ask and no staleness flag. updatedAtReadable is a relative phrase such as "a few seconds ago".
Limited operations. No SLA, status page, changelog, SDK, OpenAPI file, Postman collection or MCP server was found. Terms provide the service as is and allow IP bans at the company's discretion without notice. The terms still describe the service as gold and silver only.
One symbol per call. There is no batch endpoint, streaming, dealer or country endpoint. Free users have no stated support channel.
Terms to read
- Free-tier history. The 10 requests an hour are shared between the history and OHLC endpoints.
- Fair use. Premium is called unlimited, and the only limit text is the rule against multiple requests per second.
- Refunds. Refunds are at the company's discretion, typically for billing mistakes or service interruptions.
- Accuracy. The terms make no guarantee about the accuracy, completeness or reliability of the data.
- Governing law. Utah.

Who should pick which
Pick Gold-API.com for a prototype, a script or a free widget that needs a live price with no signup, for platinum and palladium prices, or for a $10 plan that adds history aggregates.
Pick goldprice.dev when you need a source and timestamp on each price, OHLCV bar series, 15-minute-late free access with a path to live prices, dealer prices by country, or an MCP server.
