MetalpriceAPI is a low-priced currency and metals API with a very fine price ladder: a free plan with 100 requests a month and seven paid plans from $7 a month on monthly billing. It covers 151 currencies and 20 metals, which includes platinum, palladium and industrial metals, and it updates as often as every 15 seconds on its top plans. It has no streaming and no MCP server, and its free plan is for non-commercial use.

  • Free gives 100 requests a month with daily updates. Paid plans run from Essential at $7 a month (1,000 requests, 30-minute updates) to Business Plus at $159 (1,000,000 requests, 15-second updates).
  • The prices on the pricing page open on yearly billing. Monthly billing is higher: Essential is $7 monthly and $5 yearly.
  • Overage never adds a charge. Paid plans get a 20% soft cap, and access stops at 120% of quota.
  • The site lists 8 official SDKs on GitHub, a WordPress plugin and a public status page, and no MCP or WebSocket support.

Plans and prices

The pricing page shows a ladder of nine plans. Prices open on yearly billing, and the Monthly tab shows the higher monthly figures. The yearly rates shown are 17% to 29% below the monthly ones, depending on the plan.

What it does well

Price steps. Seven paid plans let a small project start at $7 and grow without a jump. Yearly billing lowers the displayed price by 17% to 29%.

Predictable overage. The FAQ says paid customers can exceed their volume by 20%, that access is disabled after 120% of volume, and that exceeding the allowance does not result in any additional charges. Failed calls stopped counting against quota in January 2026.

Catalog. Besides gold, silver, platinum and palladium, the symbols page lists rhodium and 15 industrial metals, including copper, aluminium, nickel, zinc and lithium. It also lists city gold and silver rates for India, 13 crypto assets and 4 energy symbols.

Endpoints. The documentation lists 11: symbols, latest, historical, hourly, minutely, OHLC, convert, timeframe, change, carat and usage. Paid plans can request prices in grams or kilograms. The usage and symbols endpoints do not count against quota.

Libraries and operations. The GitHub organization holds eight MIT-licensed SDKs, and the Node and Python packages were last updated in February 2026. There is a WordPress plugin, a Postman collection, an Excel template and a status page that showed 100% uptime over 90 days on 2 November.

Where it falls short

Slow entry plans. Essential updates every 30 minutes and Basic every 10. Updates at 60 seconds start on Professional, at $39 a month billed monthly.

An evaluation-only free plan. Free allows 100 requests a month and daily updates. The FAQ restricts it to non-commercial use and requires attribution to metalpriceapi.com.

No streaming or agent tooling. No page mentions WebSocket, server-sent events, MCP or an llms.txt file. The fastest cadence is a 15-second update that you poll over REST.

Provenance and history. The FAQ says prices come from commercial sources and banks, combined by a proprietary algorithm, with no provider named. The documentation does not state when the daily archive starts. Hourly data begins on 19 June 2025, minutely data begins on 24 April 2026 and is Enterprise only, and a timeframe request is capped at 365 days.

Mixed signals. The home page headline says real-time and carries a footnote saying delayed market data. The documentation lists error code 104 as too many requests in one table and uses it for quota exhaustion in an example.

Terms to read before you pay

  • Commercial use. Paid subscribers may display the data commercially while subscribed. Once a subscription ends, commercial use of data already obtained must stop.
  • Redistribution. Reproduction, resale and exploitation of the data are forbidden without written consent.
  • Account and publicity. The terms allow suspension without notice, and they grant the company permission to use your name and logo in promotional material unless you opt out.
  • Refunds and fees. Fees are billed in advance and generally non-refundable. The company can change fees at the end of a billing cycle.
  • Uptime. There is no uptime percentage or SLA outside Enterprise.

Where goldprice.dev differs

Who should pick which

Pick MetalpriceAPI for a hobby or small commercial project that needs many currencies or metals at a low monthly price, for platinum, palladium or industrial metals, or for a mature SDK set and an EU endpoint.

Pick goldprice.dev when you need gold, silver or copper that is live from the first paid plan, a source and timestamp on each price, dealer prices by country, an MCP server, or a free plan that can run a production page.

Questions

How much does MetalpriceAPI cost?

No. Paid plans can exceed their volume by 20% without degradation, and access is disabled after 120%. The FAQ says exceeding the allowance does not result in any additional charges.
