What is premium over spot?

Premium over spot is the percentage gap between a dealer's quoted sell price and the international spot price, converted to VNDat the live exchange rate. It captures dealer margin, import costs, refining, and local demand — the reason two dealers in the same city can quote different prices for the same purity of gold. A higher premium means you're paying more above the raw metal value; this API surfaces it as a first-class field (premium_over_spot_bps) for every quote instead of leaving buyers to compute it themselves.

Gold in Vietnam

Vietnam's gold market is unusually concentrated around SJC-branded bars, which trade at a persistent, sometimes large premium over both international spot and other domestic gold brands due to import restrictions and strong retail demand. The lượng (tael) remains the everyday quoting unit alongside gram pricing, and gold purchases are a common household wealth-preservation practice, especially around Tet and other festival periods.

Convention: Priced by the lượng (tael, ~37.5g) alongside gram quotes; SJC bars are the dominant branded benchmark.

Frequently asked

  • What is a lượng and how does it relate to grams?
A lượng (also called a tael) is Vietnam's traditional gold weight unit, equal to approximately 37.5 grams. Dealer prices are commonly quoted per lượng alongside per-gram figures.
  • Why does SJC gold trade above international spot?
SJC is Vietnam's dominant bullion brand, and import restrictions on raw gold have historically limited new domestic supply, producing a persistent premium over the international spot price that this API surfaces as premium-over-spot in basis points.
