Calculate gold price per gram by multiplying the 24K price by the karat number, then dividing by 24. Today's 22K price is $117.65 per gram, 21K is $112.31, and 18K is $96.26. These are spot values for the gold content, before shop charges.
- Karat tells you how much of a piece is pure gold.
- Multiply the matching price per gram by the piece's weight in grams.

What karat means
Pure gold accounts for a share of 24 parts. A 22K piece contains 22/24 pure gold; an 18K piece contains 18/24, or 75%. At equal weights, higher karat means more pure gold and a higher gold content value.
Jewellery stamps express purity differently. The usual matches are 999 for 24K, 916 for 22K, 875 for 21K, 750 for 18K and 585 for 14K. Match the stamp to its table row.
22K is common in Indian, South Asian and Gulf jewellery; 21K in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf. 18K is common in Europe and the US, and in fine jewellery. Bars and coins commonly use 24K.
Calculate the price per gram
Divide the gold spot price per troy ounce by 31.1035, then multiply by 0.999 because 24K gold is 99.9% pure. One troy ounce contains 31.1035 g. Multiply the resulting 24K gram price by the karat number, then divide by 24.
For 22K, multiply the 24K gram price by 22/24; for 21K, use 21/24; for 18K, use 18/24. Keep the same currency throughout so you can compare the ounce and gram prices directly.
The ounce price is $3,996.20, which gives a 24K gram price of $128.35. If you already have the 24K price per gram, apply the purity fraction directly.
Today's gold prices by karat
Prices are in US dollars and fifteen minutes late. Each karat has a row with its share of pure gold, usual jewellery stamp, price per gram and value for 10 g. The price time is 23 Oct 2026, 21:08 UTC.
Match your piece's karat or stamp to a row for its gram price. Use the weight column if your piece weighs 10 g. These spot values cover the gold content; making charges, dealer margin and tax are extra.
| Karat | Pure gold | Stamp | Per gram | Per 10 g |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24K | 99.9% | 999 | $128.35 | $1,283.50 |
| 22K | 91.67% | 916 | $117.65 | $1,176.50 |
| 21K | 87.5% | 875 | $112.31 | $1,123.10 |
| 18K | 75% | 750 | $96.26 | $962.60 |
| 14K | 58.33% | 585 | $74.87 | $748.70 |
Work out a chain's gold value
For a 22K chain weighing 10 g, multiply $117.65 per gram by 10. Its gold content is worth $1,176.50 at the spot price. The karat price already accounts for purity, so use it directly.
At the same weight, an 18K chain has a gold content value of $962.60, at $96.26 per gram. The 22K chain contains more pure gold, which accounts for the difference in value.
For another weight, multiply the matching karat price per gram by the weight in grams. Compare this gold content value with the shop's total.

Making charges, a dealer margin and sometimes tax add to a shop's jewellery price. The spot calculation is a reference for the gold inside the piece; the amount you pay also reflects those charges.
Calculate each piece's gold content value, then compare shop totals. Weight and karat affect the gold value; making charges, margin and tax affect the final price.
