Compare a dealer's price with the metal's spot value. Here, the spot value uses the 24K gram price at 99.9% purity in ringgit, as on Malaysia's gold price page. The Malaysian bar's selling price of MYR 17,286.00 against MYR 16,351.11 gives a premium of 5.7%.
- Use the item's weight, purity and full selling price.
- Calculate its spot value in the same currency.
- Compare matching products and what each price includes.
Get the weight, purity and price
Record the dealer's price, the item's weight and its purity. Identify whether it is a bar or coin so the comparison stays consistent. Check whether the quoted total includes tax, delivery and an assay certificate. Do not assume every offer includes the same things.
The worked example uses a one troy ounce gold bar in Malaysia. Its gold weight is 31.1035 g, and the dealer asks MYR 17,286.00. Keep the calculation in Malaysian ringgit throughout. Mixing a local selling price with a dollar spot quote would give the wrong comparison.
Calculate the spot value
Use the 24K spot gram price at 99.9% purity in ringgit. For this bar, multiplying 31.1035 g by MYR 525.70 per gram gives a spot value of MYR 16,351.11. This is the metal value before the dealer's added charges.
For other items, account for purity before multiplying by a pure gold gram price. A lower purity item's full weight is not all gold. Use matching quote times as well as matching currencies. The page's spot prices are fifteen minutes late, with a quote time of 26 Oct 2026, 06:43 UTC.
Subtract the metal value
Subtract the spot value of MYR 16,351.11 from the dealer's price of MYR 17,286.00. The difference is MYR 934.89. This is the premium in money. It shows how much the offer adds above the gold content's spot value.
The table keeps the calculation in order: spot price per gram, bar value, dealer price and premium. Every calculated amount comes from the figures shown before it. Keep any included tax or delivery charges visible when comparing this total with another offer.
| Item | How it is worked out | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Spot price per gram | API price, 24K at 99.9%, in ringgit | MYR 525.70 |
| Spot value of the bar | Per gram times 31.1035 | MYR 16,351.11 |
| Dealer's price | What the dealer asks | MYR 17,286.00 |
| Premium in money | Dealer's price minus spot value | MYR 934.89 |
| Premium as a percentage | Premium divided by spot value | 5.7% |
Divide the difference by spot value
Divide the premium of MYR 934.89 by the spot value of MYR 16,351.11, then express the result as a percentage. The result is 5.7%. The amount being divided by is the metal's spot value, not the dealer's selling price.
Compare offers for the same weight and form. Smaller pieces carry higher percentage premiums. Fairness depends on the market, product and services. The live dealer tables use pure gold, putting premiums about 0.1 percentage points from a 99.9% calculation. A dealer's buyback price is below its selling price and needs a separate comparison.
