Calculate the gold to silver ratio by dividing the gold price per troy ounce by the silver price per troy ounce. With gold at $3,996.20 and silver at $53.92, the current ratio, from prices 15 minutes late, is 74.1. It gives the silver ounces matching a gold ounce's spot value.
- Divide the gold ounce price by the silver ounce price.
- Use matching currencies, weight units and quote times.
- A higher ratio means silver is cheaper relative to gold at those prices.
Match the price basis
Start with gold and silver spot prices in US dollars per troy ounce. A troy ounce contains 31.1035 g for either metal. Because both quotes use the same currency and weight unit, you can divide them directly.
Use quotes from the same time where possible. The quote time is 23 Oct 2026, 21:08 UTC, and prices are 15 minutes late. Mixing a newer gold quote with an older silver quote can change the ratio you calculate.
Divide gold by silver
Take the gold ounce price of $3,996.20 and divide its dollar amount by the silver ounce price of $53.92. The result is 74.1. Keep gold as the amount being divided and silver as the amount you divide by.
The ratio has no currency unit because the matching dollar units cancel. The ratio uses the ounce prices, rounded to the cent. Use those same amounts on a calculator to check the result, allowing for the ratio's rounding.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Gold, per troy ounce | $3,996.20 |
| Silver, per troy ounce | $53.92 |
| Gold to silver ratio | 74.1 |
Read what the ratio means
The ratio compares equal spot values across the metals. It tells you the silver ounce weight that matches the spot value of a troy ounce of gold. It does not compare the physical size of bars or the prices of particular coins.
A higher ratio means silver is cheaper relative to gold. A lower ratio means fewer silver ounces match a gold ounce's value. This describes the relationship between the prices; it does not tell you what either price will do next.
Fetch both spot prices from the API
The requests below fetch the gold and silver spot quotes separately. Read the ounce price from each response, check the currency and quote times, then divide the gold amount by the silver amount. Keep both responses together when checking your calculation.
The keyless API needs no key or sign-up. Prices are 15 minutes late, with a limit of 100 requests an hour. A free key allows 5,000 calls a month. Each spot request returns a metal quote for your calculation.

The ratio uses spot prices for metal content. Gold and silver products can carry different dealer premiums, making charges and taxes. Those additions mean a comparison of shop totals may give a different result.
Use the spot ratio when comparing the quoted metals themselves. If you are checking actual items, calculate each item's metal content and full price separately. The ratio alone cannot tell you the amount a shop will charge or a buyer will offer.
