Compare gold prices between countries

Match the metal value first, then compare local retail charges

26 Oct 2026 · 2 min read

Compare gold prices between countries using the same weight, purity and quote time. Gold has one world spot price, expressed in different currencies. At 27 Oct 2026, 10:54 UTC, gold is $4,007.74 per troy ounce, with a 24K gram price of $128.72 in US dollars. These prices are fifteen minutes late.

  • Match the weight unit, purity and quote time.
  • Convert local currency amounts to a common currency.
  • Compare dealer premiums, taxes and making charges separately.

Pick the same unit and purity

Start with a gram of 24K gold (99.9% pure) in each country. A local jewellery price and a 24K spot price may describe different metal content. Matching the purity prevents that difference from looking like a difference between countries.

A troy ounce contains 31.1035 g. Divide the ounce price by 31.1035, then multiply by 0.999 because 24K gold is 99.9% pure. Keep the same unit throughout the comparison. Do not compare an ounce amount in one currency with a gram amount in another.

Get spot prices in each currency

The table shows the same gold spot value in different currencies, with both troy ounce and 24K gram prices. Its final column is the local currency ounce price divided by the US dollar ounce price, giving the implied units per US dollar.

The API serves gold in 31 currencies, USD included. Request /v1/spot/XAU-EUR-SPOT for the euro ounce quote, or use /v1/convert with XAU as the starting asset, your chosen currency and the gram unit. The conversion reference describes the request.

The API's gram figures count gold as pure, while this site prices 24K gold at 99.9% purity. The API's gram figure is about 0.1% higher than the page's, so allow for this when comparing.

Convert to a common currency

To express a local gram price in US dollars, divide it by the matching units per US dollar. For euros, the table shows unavailable per gram and an implied rate of unavailable. The US dollar gram price alongside it is unavailable.

Use the currency amounts inside those displayed values for the calculation. Compare quotes from the same moment. Different quote times or display rounding can create a difference caused by timing or precision, not a different value for gold.

Add local retail extras separately

A shop price can include a dealer premium, import duty, VAT or GST, and making charges. Keep these additions separate from the spot metal value. Their presence explains why retail totals can differ even after the currencies have been converted.

For physical products, compare matching weights, purities and forms, then record what each total includes. The dealer tables by country show listed product prices and premiums. A local retail total and a spot quote answer different price questions.

Read the currency comparison

A larger number in one currency does not mean gold is worth more in that country. Currency units have different values. The spot comparison becomes meaningful only after the amounts share the same currency, weight, purity and quote time.

Keep the exchange rate with your calculation so someone else can follow it. When checking an actual purchase price, keep the retail additions alongside the converted metal value. This shows which part comes from gold and which part comes from local charges.

Questions

Is gold worth more in some countries?

Gold has one world spot price, expressed in different currencies. Retail prices can differ because of dealer premiums, import duty, VAT or GST, and making charges added to the metal value.

How do I convert a local gold price to US dollars?

Divide the local currency price by the matching exchange rate expressed as units per US dollar. Keep the weight, purity and quote time unchanged so the resulting amounts describe the same gold content.

What does the table's exchange rate column mean?

The final column divides each currency's gold ounce price by the US dollar ounce price. It shows the implied number of local currency units per US dollar from those matching gold quotes.

Why is a jewellery shop's price different from spot?

A jewellery shop's total can include making charges, dealer premium and local taxes. Purity also changes the gold content. Compare the matching spot metal value first, then account for each retail addition.
