Gold prices in Claude

Ask Claude for gold prices by currency or karat, with the price time included in each answer

24 Oct 2026 · 2 min read

Get gold, silver and copper prices in Claude through the goldprice.dev MCP server. Local setup needs a free API key and Node.js. Paid plans return live prices; Free prices are delayed.

  • Every plan has MCP access, including Free.
  • Ask for spot prices, karat prices per gram and price history.
  • Each answer has the time of the price.

Get a free API key

Sign up at goldprice.dev for a free API key without a credit card. Free has 5,000 calls a month and a limit of 10 requests a minute.

Install Node.js so Claude can start the goldprice.dev MCP program locally when you connect the server.

Add the server to Claude Desktop

Open Claude Desktop's config file: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json on macOS, or %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json on Windows. Add the goldprice entry under mcpServers and replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key.

Save the file, then fully quit Claude and reopen it. On macOS, use Cmd-Q. Closing the window is not enough because MCP servers load once when Claude starts.

claude_desktop_config.json
{  "mcpServers": {    "goldprice": {      "command": "npx",      "args": [        "-y",        "@nusantara-ventures/goldprice-mcp"      ],      "env": {        "GP_KEY": "YOUR_API_KEY"      }    }  }}

Or add it to Claude Code

With Node.js installed, run the Claude Code command after replacing YOUR_API_KEY with your goldprice.dev key. It sets GP_KEY through -e.

Shell
claude mcp add goldprice -e GP_KEY=YOUR_API_KEY -- npx -y @nusantara-ventures/goldprice-mcp

Connect to the remote server

Use https://api.goldprice.dev/v1/mcp/ with streamable HTTP, keeping the trailing slash. The remote server needs no install, Node.js or API key. Run the Claude Code command to add it.

Without a key, get_spot_price, list_commodities, get_carat, search_docs, get_metadata and get_historical answer; prices are delayed 15 minutes, the same as Free. get_physical_price and get_forward_view return plan_gated errors; start_checkout returns api_key_required. get_physical_price needs Basic or above; get_forward_view is for legacy plans only. get_historical gives 30 days of daily history; longer history needs a paid plan. For live prices, use the local server with a paid key as above, or the REST API.

Shell
claude mcp add --transport http goldprice https://api.goldprice.dev/v1/mcp/

Ask Claude for a price

Once the server is connected, ask in your own words. Claude uses a tool for each request.

"What is 22K gold per gram in Indian rupees right now?" uses get_carat.

"What is gold trading at in US dollars?" uses get_spot_price.

"Show me silver's daily closes for the last month" uses get_historical.

"Which countries have dealer prices?" uses get_physical_price, which needs Basic or above.

What Claude can read

Every plan has gold, silver and copper spot prices. Karat prices range from 24K to 10K per gram in 35 currencies. Claude can list supported symbols, check their units and freshness, and search the goldprice.dev docs.

Daily history covers 30 days on Free and one year on Basic, with longer history on higher plans. Intraday bars need Plus or Pro; dealer prices need Basic or above.

Claude reads the returned numbers and includes the price time. Reference prices are not trade offers. Buying a paid plan through Claude uses the checkout tool and requires your confirmation.

If something goes wrong

If Claude shows no tools, check for invalid JSON, usually a trailing comma. Save corrections, then fully quit and reopen Claude Desktop to load the server again.

For invalid_api_key, set GP_KEY in the Claude Desktop config's env block. Shell settings do not work because Claude Desktop does not inherit your terminal's environment.
